Hot Holidays in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. As this little
Canary Island located off the coast of Africa basks in year round sunshine, enjoying average temperatures in excess of 20 Celsius. Making it the closest winter sun destination to Northern Europe – which is just four hours flying time away.
Places To Stay
Tourism first took off on Lanzarote in the 1970´s. And today the island welcomes around 1.5 million foreign visitors every year.
Around 40% of the islands tourist beds are accounted for by hotels and aparthotels. Whilst self catering accommodation such as apartments and villas in Lanzarote have proved very popular with British, Irish and German guests in recent years. Especially amongst tourists who prefer to book their own holidays direct online. With the bulk of the best villa accommodation located in the two largest resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.
Sightseeing
As well as over ninety beaches Lanzarote boasts a wealth of visitor attractions and natural beauty spots.
The best known of these is the Timanfaya National Park. Home to over 300 volcanoes and a sea of solidified lava that was created by a series of eruptions some 250 years ago. Here visitors can tour the volcano park on expertly driven coaches and view the devastation caused up close. Before visiting the Devils Diner in the heart of the park. Where meat and chicken is barbecued on a huge grill powered by heat emanating from the earth’s core below.
Volcanic activity has had a huge impact on the southern half of Lanzarote. But this recedes as you venture north. Giving way to greener valleys and gentler scenery which reveals more of the islands agricultural past.
One of the most impressive sights on the island is the Valley of 1000 Palms. Which very much resembles an African oasis. With the crowns of giant palms swaying gently amidst white washed villages, such as Haria and Maguez.
The former island capital of Teguise is also well worth visiting. As this historic town dates back to the early 1400´s and is home to a treasure trove of colonial architecture. Including the oldest building in the Canaries, which dates back to 1455.
Getting There
Flights to Lanzarote are available from all major UK airports with return prices starting from around £200 return. There is just the one airport servicing the island – Arrecife. And it is located around three miles outside the capital city of the same name.
